Writing & Time: Some Thoughts

The blog migration has begun. I realize that we’re just one week away from the official start of winter and two weeks shy of Christmas. So, if I were a southbound Canada Goose (or Santa Claus), you’d be right to tell me I should have started this big project earlier in the autumn season.

But, is timing everything? I put to you that what is far more important is TIME itself. In particular, I have grown increasingly concerned with the question of how we spend our time. As this fraught and complicated year draws to a close, I find my relationship with time has changed.

What is time well spent?
What is time wasted?
What should one do when wakeful hours come between one and four in the morning?
Does a stitch in time really “save nine”?
What is waiting all about?
Is it ever, really, the right time or the wrong time?
The “time is now” to do what exactly?

These are big questions and some have long answers. In the interest of time (sorry, could not resist), I’ll just share the highlights. I have come to treasure quiet time with my family: those in-between moments when we are gathered together but not speaking — just being. I have decided that being present to those around me and getting through each day with grace is more than enough. And I have chosen to reclaim my creative hours for myself — to give myself permission to say that writing my own work is “worth the time.”

And so? Big changes. No more marketing stuff by day, trying to scrape together a few words by night. I’ve stepped away from the day job to greet 2021 with more time for loving, reading, teaching and so. much. writing.

Today, I am inspired by how much heart, humor and insight about time the uber-talented Annah Feinberg weaves into a few short panels in this New Yorker Shout. I hope something made you smile today.

Wishing you many happy moments in the coming week.
